Wet Weather Backup Plan for Brisbane Outdoor Parties (2026)

Brisbane weather has one personality during the day and a completely different one between 3pm and 7pm in summer. If you’re planning an outdoor party between October and March, the storm risk is real — and yes, your jumping castle hire is going to be affected if a storm rolls in.

Here’s the realistic Brisbane wet-weather backup plan, used by parents, P&C committees and event coordinators who’ve been through this before.

First, what does “wet weather” actually mean for a hire?

Hire companies use specific weather thresholds, not “looks a bit cloudy”:

• Light rain (under 5mm/hr) — most dry-use inflatables stay up. Water slides obviously keep going. Fun food machines need a marquee or undercover area.
• Heavy rain (over 5mm/hr) — non-water inflatables come down. Slippery deck + electrical blower + bare feet = not safe.
• Wind over 40 km/h — every inflatable comes down regardless of rain. AS 3533 mandates this threshold.
• Lightning within 10km — every inflatable comes down, supervisor evacuates the area. Brisbane summer storms produce close-strike lightning routinely.

If your party falls inside any of those thresholds, the hire company will call you. The decision is not “we’ll see how it goes” — it’s mandatory under their insurance policy.

Your three backup options, ranked by effort

Option 1 — Free reschedule (lowest effort, lowest risk)

Most Brisbane hire companies (including us) offer a free reschedule when weather forces a cancellation. The morning of your party, if the forecast shows heavy storms or sustained 40+ km/h winds, you call the hire company and move the date.

When this works: when your party isn’t on a fixed date (birthday is on the weekend, you don’t care if it’s this Saturday or next Saturday). When your guests can flex their RSVPs by 1–2 weeks.

When this doesn’t work: weddings, school fetes, corporate events with a guest count of 200+, anything tied to a venue booking.

Cost: $0. Reputable Brisbane hire companies don’t charge for weather-forced reschedules.

Option 2 — Indoor-friendly equipment swap

Some inflatables work indoors — disco domes, photo booths, sumo suits, fun food machines. Others can’t be moved indoors at all — water slides, large combo castles, obstacle courses.

If your wet-weather plan is “we’ll just move it inside,” check before booking whether the equipment will fit:

Sports halls, school gyms and community centres usually have 4–6m ceilings and will fit most inflatables. Living rooms and garages don’t.

Option 3 — Marquee backup

A marquee gives you the best of both worlds: the inflatable stays outside (which is what guests expect for a “jumping castle party”), but you’ve got a covered eating area, a covered fun-food zone, and a place for guests to wait out a storm.

• 6×6m corporate — $450–$650

For a 30-kid birthday party with a jumping castle and fun food, the standard combo is castle outside + 6×3m marquee covering the food table + photo booth in the marquee. Total backup investment: around $300 on top of the castle hire.

For bigger events (school fete, wedding), look at proper event marquee suppliers who can do 9×9m and larger with sides, lighting and weighting.

What to ask the hire company about wet weather

Before you book, three questions:

1. What’s your weather threshold? Look for a written policy. “We’ll let you know if it’s too windy” is not a policy.
2. What’s the cancellation/reschedule cost? Free reschedule is standard for reputable Brisbane hire companies. Anyone charging for a weather-forced reschedule is a red flag.
3. When do you make the call? The morning of the party, or the day before? The morning is more accurate but more disruptive. The day before is less accurate but gives you time to message guests.

Wet-weather-friendly party ideas

If you’re booking 4+ weeks out and worried about Brisbane summer storms, plan a party that works in any weather:

Theme: Pool party + slushie machine — water slide outside if it’s sunny, kids play inside if it pours. The slushie machine works inside or outside. No castle to worry about.

Theme: Movie/disco party + disco dome — set up the disco dome at the venue (you’ll need at least 3m of ceiling, so a hall is better than a house). The dome works rain or shine.

Theme: Carnival party + multiple small games — sumo suits, foam pits, carnival games inside; one inflatable outside as the “main event”. If the outdoor inflatable comes down, the party keeps going indoors.

Theme: School fete bootcamp + supervised obstacle course — pay for supervised hire. The supervisor handles weather decisions in real-time and helps move guests under cover when it starts.

Real Brisbane storm story

Last December a Carindale birthday party had a 5pm storm warning. We delivered the castle at 11am for a 2pm party. The storm tracked east and missed them — castle stayed up, kids had a great party.

The week before, a Wynnum party had no storm warning at all. At 3:30pm a sudden 60 km/h gust came through Moreton Bay.
