Jumping Castle Safety: A Brisbane Parent's Guide (2026)
Wind limits, supervision rules, age guidelines, and what to check before you book. Plain-English safety advice for jumping castle hire in Brisbane from a company that has delivered 3,000+ events.
Jumping castle accidents are rare in Australia — but when they happen, they make the news. Most are preventable with the right setup, supervision and common sense. Here’s what to actually watch for as a parent or event organiser.
The four main risks
1. Wind
Inflatables can become unstable in strong winds. Manufacturers rate jumping castles up to 30 km/h as a safe operating threshold. Above that, the castle must be deflated and secured.
This is non-negotiable and it’s not just a recommendation — it’s an Australian Standard requirement under AS 3533.4, which governs amusement rides and devices including inflatable play equipment.
In Brisbane, afternoon thunderstorms between October and March can push winds well past this threshold quickly. Always check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast for the day before and monitor conditions during the event.
What to do: If conditions deteriorate and wind picks up, deflate the castle and get the kids off it. Don’t wait to see if it passes — deflating takes 5 minutes and is much easier than the alternative.
2. Mixed ages
The most common cause of jumping castle injuries in Australia is not defective equipment — it’s bigger kids accidentally landing on or colliding with smaller kids.
Mixing 2-year-olds and 10-year-olds in the same castle is asking for trouble. The size and weight difference means that when the bigger child lands, the smaller one can be thrown or knocked.
Rule of thumb: Keep under-5s separate from over-5s. Many of our hire options include toddler playpens specifically designed for this — contained, lower walls, soft floor.
3. Unsupervised use
Most serious incidents occur when no adult is actively watching the castle. “Actively” means standing near it, not checking their phone from across the yard.
You don’t need a trained professional for a kids’ birthday party — just an engaged adult whose sole job for that period is watching the castle. Rotate the duty every 15–20 minutes if it’s a long event.
For school events, corporate events and school fetes, we offer an optional trained supervisor from $95/hr ($125/hr Saturday, $150/hr Sunday). This is strongly recommended for any event with over 30 participants cycling through across the day.
4. Hard surfaces and poor setup
Castles set up on concrete, pavers or uneven surfaces are more likely to cause injury when kids fall. The correct setup is:
- Flat, grassed area (preferred)
- If on hard surfaces, proper anti-fatigue matting must be used under and around the castle
- Safety mats at the entrance/exit (included with every Brizzy hire)
- 1m of clear space on all sides
- No overhead branches, power lines or obstacles
Australian Standard AS 3533.4
This standard covers inflatable amusement devices in Australia and sets minimum requirements for:
- Maximum wind speed (30 km/h)
- Anchoring requirements (stakes on grass, sandbags on hard surfaces)
- Inflation monitoring
- Participant capacity limits
- Age and weight restrictions per unit
All reputable Brisbane jumping castle hire companies operate under this standard. When you’re comparing hire companies, ask whether their equipment is compliant with AS 3533.4 and whether they carry the required public liability insurance.
What we do at Brizzy:
- Every castle is anchored with stakes (grass) or sandbags (hard surfaces) before handover
- Safety pressure is checked before the castle is left with you
- We carry $20 million public liability insurance — certificate of currency available on request
- We do not operate in winds over 30 km/h or heavy rain
What to check when the hire company arrives
Before the driver leaves, check:
- Anchoring — all stakes or sandbags are in place and the castle is not moving when unoccupied
- Entrance mat — safety mat is positioned at the castle entrance
- Clearance — 1m clear on all sides, no overhead obstacles
- Blower — the blower motor is plugged into a secure outlet and running continuously (the castle deflates if power is cut)
- Capacity — confirm the maximum number of children allowed at one time (it should be printed on the unit)
If anything looks wrong, ask before the driver leaves.
What you do as the parent or event organiser
Before they jump:
- Shoes off, glasses off, no sharp objects in pockets
- No food or drink inside the castle
- Limit by age — under-5s must be separated from over-5s
- Confirm capacity and enforce it — don’t let 15 kids pile in if the limit is 8
While they jump:
- Active adult supervision at all times
- No somersaults, flips or wrestling
- No jumping near the entrance/exit
- Stop if rain starts, wind picks up noticeably, or any child is distressed
- If a child falls, check before allowing others to keep jumping
Location rules:
- 1m clear on all sides — enforce this throughout the event
- Flat ground — children should not be jumping on a sloped surface
- Shade is ideal in Queensland summer — black vinyl absorbs heat and can become very hot in direct sun
Wet weather and wind
Brisbane’s weather, especially in summer, can change quickly. Our wet weather policy is straightforward:
- Light drizzle: Castle can usually continue operating. Surfaces become slippery — reduce capacity and slow down activity.
- Moderate to heavy rain: Castle must be deflated. Rain significantly increases slip risk on vinyl surfaces.
- Wind over 30 km/h: Castle must be deflated. This is not negotiable.
- Thunderstorm warning: Deflate immediately and move children indoors.
We will call you the day before your booking if the forecast looks marginal. If you’re worried, check our wet weather policy — we’d rather reschedule than risk an incident.
If a booking is cancelled due to weather, we’ll work with you on a reschedule or credit. Details on the policy page.
Hiring in council parks
Most Brisbane City Council and surrounding council parks require:
- A hire permit — apply online through the relevant council. Allow 10–14 business days. Typical cost is $50–$100.
- A copy of the hire company’s public liability insurance certificate — we’ll send this to you on request.
- Sometimes a risk assessment form — especially for larger events. We can provide a standard risk assessment document.
Some parks also have restrictions on staking (which means we use sandbags), maximum equipment size, or setup times. Let us know which park when you enquire and we’ll flag any known requirements.
Common Brisbane parks where we regularly deliver:
- Raby Bay Harbour Park (Redlands)
- Frew Park (Milton)
- New Farm Park
- Victoria Park (Spring Hill)
- Murarrie Recreation Reserve
If your park isn’t listed — don’t worry, we’ve probably been there. Just let us know the location.
How to choose a reputable hire company
When comparing jumping castle hire companies in Brisbane, check:
- Public liability insurance: Ask for the COC (Certificate of Currency) if it’s not published on their site. Minimum $20m is standard. Less than this is a red flag.
- Equipment condition: Look for recent photos of actual hire units — not stock images. Faded, patchy graphics or visible repairs are signs of old equipment.
- Written wet weather policy: If there’s no policy, you have no protection when Brisbane does what Brisbane does.
- Proper anchoring: Ask whether they stake on grass and sandbag on hard surfaces. Anyone who says anchoring isn’t necessary is wrong.
- Reviews: Google reviews with recent dates and specific mentions of setup quality and professionalism are a good signal.
Frequently asked safety questions
Can I hire a jumping castle for the park without a council permit? You can hire and set up without a permit at some parks, but you’re taking a risk. Most councils have rangers who will ask you to remove the equipment if you don’t have a permit. It’s not worth it — permits are cheap and easy to get with two weeks’ notice.
What’s the maximum wind speed for a jumping castle? 30 km/h is the manufacturer and AS 3533.4 threshold. Above this, the castle must be deflated.
Do I need to supervise the castle the whole time? Yes. An adult must be actively watching (not casually nearby) the entire time the castle is in use.
Can kids eat inside the castle? No. Food and drink inside the castle is a choking hazard and a hygiene issue. Keep snacks well away from the entrance.
What if the blower stops working? Call us immediately. The castle will deflate within a few minutes without the blower. Get all children off it before it deflates fully. We carry backup equipment and will respond as fast as possible.
